Privacy policy
This site publishes public records. It keeps as little as it can about the people who read them. This page says exactly what is recorded and why.
Who operates this site
Police Transparency New Jersey is an independent project published under the identity Police Transparency New Jersey Project. It is not a government body and is not affiliated with any police department or law enforcement agency. Questions about this policy go to [email protected].
Analytics
The site measures its own readership with a self-hosted copy of Matomo, an open-source analytics package. The tracker is configured not to set cookies, to honor the Do Not Track setting in your browser, and to anonymize IP addresses before they are stored. It records which pages were viewed, the referring site, the browser and device type, and the terms typed into the site's own search box, as anonymous events. Nothing in it identifies a person, nothing is shared with a third party, and nothing is sold. The analytics data is used to understand which records people look for and which pages need work.
The contact and corrections forms
The contact and corrections forms are processed by Netlify Forms, the form service of the company that hosts this site. The contact form collects a name, an email address, a subject, and a message. The corrections form collects the page or source note you are referring to, the claim you are disputing, what you believe the record shows, and an email address so the project can reply. Both forms include a hidden field that catches automated submissions.
Submissions are stored by Netlify under its own privacy policy and forwarded to the project mailbox. They are kept only as long as it takes to answer or resolve the request, and are deleted on request. A correction that changes a page is recorded on that page without naming who asked for it.
Advertising
This site may display advertising served by Google AdSense to help cover the cost of running it. Ads may appear on any page of the site. Advertising has no influence on what is published; the editorial standards page sets out the separation.
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visit to this site and other sites on the Internet. You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info. Google explains how it handles data from sites that use its services at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are shown a consent message before any advertising cookie is set, served through Google's certified consent framework. Declining it means ads on this site are not personalized for you.
Hosting
The site is a set of static pages served by Netlify. Netlify keeps standard server logs, which include the requesting IP address, under its own privacy policy. The project does not receive or review those logs.
Links and share buttons
Pages link to official sources, to other sites, and to sharing and AI-assistant services through the share and "Ask AI" buttons. Those buttons are plain links: nothing loads from those services until you follow one. Once you leave this site, the other site's policies apply.
Public records about individuals
The site republishes public records released by the New Jersey Attorney General, some of which name police officers. Those names are part of the official record, not information collected from visitors. How the project decides what to publish about a named person, and how to ask for a correction or a removal, is described on the editorial standards and corrections pages.
Children
The site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices and how to reach the project
To decline analytics, turn on Do Not Track in your browser; the tracker respects it. To decline personalized advertising, use the Google links above. To ask what the project holds about a form submission you made, or to have it deleted, write to [email protected].
