Terms

Terms of use

Plain terms for a site built from public records. Read them alongside the privacy policy.

Scope

These terms cover policetransparencynj.com and everything published on it, including the downloadable data files. By using the site you accept them. If you do not, the remedy is simple: do not use the site.

What the content is

The site republishes public records released by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General and other named public sources, and adds analysis that is labeled as analysis. Records are shown as reported by the agency that filed them. Major discipline records describe final, adjudicated actions; internal affairs figures describe complaints and investigations, and an allegation is not a finding. Where a reported field is blank, the site says "not reported" rather than guessing.

Report-card grades, benchmarks, and rankings are this site's interpretation of the records, computed by a published method. They are opinion grounded in data, not statements of fact about any person or agency, and the methodology page explains their limits.

Nothing on the site is legal advice. This is not a government site and it speaks for no agency.

Accuracy and corrections

Every factual claim carries a citation to the source record it came from. The site regenerates from each new official release, so a record can change when the underlying release changes. If you believe a page misstates the official record, use the corrections page; that is the route the project checks against the cited source.

What you may do with it

You may read, quote, link to, and cite any page. Quotations and reproductions should credit Police Transparency NJ and link to the page they came from; every page carries a ready-made citation. The data files on the downloads page may be reused on the terms stated there, which pass through the terms of the original public sources.

What you may not do

  • Present the site, or any page of it, as an official or government publication.
  • Use the records to harass, threaten, or intimidate anyone named on the site, or anyone else. The records are public because accountability requires it, not so that they can be used as a weapon.
  • Run automated requests at a rate that degrades the service for other readers. The data files exist so that bulk reuse never has to crawl the pages.
  • Remove citations or the independence notice from reproduced material.

Links and advertising

Links to other sites are provided for reference. The project does not control them and is not responsible for what they publish. The site may display advertising served by a third party; an ad is not an endorsement, and advertising has no bearing on what the site publishes, as the editorial standards page sets out.

No warranty

The site is provided as is. The project works to make it accurate and keeps it current with each official release, but it does not warrant that any page is complete, current, or free of error, and it cannot warrant the accuracy of the underlying government records it republishes. To the fullest extent the law allows, the project is not liable for any loss arising from use of the site or reliance on its content.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.

Changes

The terms may be revised. The version on this page is the one in force; continued use after a revision is acceptance of it.
