Synopsis as reported by the agency
On 11/12/23, an incarcerated person was splashed with an unknown substance by two other incarcerated individuals at New Jersey State Prison, resulting in significant burns to his arms, face, and body. The incarcerated person was subsequently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit/Burn Unit at St. Barnebas Medical Center in Livingston. Although injuries were inflicted on 11/12/23, at approximately 8:54 a.m., he was not taken out of his cell or provided with medical assistance until the following day, 11/13/23, at approximately 7:15 a.m. Senior Correctional Police Officer (SCPO) Lashay Griffin was responsible for count of the injured incarcerated person's unit at the time the individual was splashed. SCPO Griffin admittedly failed to tour the unit on 11/12/23. She claimed that she did not tour the unit during second shift because the unit was unsafe as a result of malfunctioning cell doors, which was reported to her supervisors; however, SCPO Griffin was not ordered to refrain from tours/counts during her shift on that date. Despite signing Count Slips, SCPO Griffin admitted that she did not conduct count at 2:20 p.m., 4:00 p.m., or 7:00 p.m. and that she falsified paperwork stating that the counts were conducted. Further, although she stated that a count was not conducted because she was concerned with her safety, SCPO Griffin failed to notify a supervisor that the count was not being conducted on that shift. SCPO Griffin also admitted during the course of the investigation that she was unaware of any injury to an incarcerated person earlier on the night of 11/12/23. She admitted that she failed to tour the unit during her shift and failed to notice any injuries to an incarcerated person or call a Code-33. SCPO Griffin signed a settlement agreement for a 90-day suspension on 1/16/25.
